How do you choose the right water pump?
Pump selection is about more than maximum flow rate or motor size. The pump needs to provide the required flow at the required pressure, taking into account factors such as:
- Water source
- Required flow rate
- Required operating pressure
- Vertical lift and total head
- Pipe length and diameter
- Friction losses
- Filters, valves and fittings
- Irrigation equipment or other end-use requirements
For more complex systems, particularly irrigation, rural water supply and larger commercial applications, correct pump selection should be based on the calculated system duty rather than simply choosing the largest pump available.
